Efficiency increased: repowering completed in Glaubitz

Eight old plants dismantled and four new ones built, increasing the production of electricity fivefold

The repowering project in the German federal state of Saxony was realized in two phases. The first two plants were already connected to the grid in early September. On 21 December 2016, the second phase, and therefore the entire project, was successfully completed.

In the course of both phases, a total of eight old power plants had to make way for four new ones. The resulting increase in efficiency is impressive: the new plants will generate 40,000 MWh of clean energy per year. In contrast, their eight predecessor plants produced 8,000 MWh. The new Vestas V126 turbines boast a total capacity of 13.2 MW. The plants of 137 meters hub height are the largest in W.E.B history and the first of their type in the German federal state of Saxony.

Moreover, this project also demonstrates the easy and environmentally friendly dismantling process of worn-out wind energy plants. The concrete base is fully removed without leaving any residues in the soil. Some elements of the old plants may also be recycled. What remains is pure nature.
