W.E.B production results January 2018

02/2018 - Back to overview

Good wind conditions – production results almost as planned. The overall monthly production of 107,619 MWh just barely missed its target.

An unusual amount of weather fronts, some turning into major windstorms , crossed Europe from the Atlantic. In some parts of Central Europe, their humid and mild air masses resulted in heavy rainfall and unusually mild weather conditions. Good news for us, as there were hardly any incidents of iced rotor blades in Austria’s lowlands. While Austria did not perform as expected, though, Germany, the Czech Republic, and France mostly reported clearly positive results. In contrast, our Canadian plants were hit particularly hard in January. Blizzards with average wind speeds of up to 150 km/h (almost 95 mph) and extremely low temperatures not only caused severe icing but also extended grid failures, shutting down some of our plants for several days in a row. Canada concluded the month just below target, while the United States performed much better than expected.

The heavy cloud cover hardly allowed the sun to break through in Central Europe. In the photovoltaic segment, Austria and the Czech Republic remained below target. Italy delivered clearly positive results.

Austria and Germany benefitted from the heavy rainfall and generated more hydroelectric energy than expected.
